Just a fair warning, this blog is for those who want to use YouTube for profit…and I’m not talking casual profit either! I am talking, full fledged #Boss status.
I used YouTube to build a 6-figure business, and that’s what I teach. So, if you are one of those casual content creators who just wants to create a channel to upload random snippets of your cat every 5 weeks – then this blog post is post if probably not for you. No offense taken if you X out J
Ok…now on to the actual topic of this post.
You may be able to find some really awesome “how to start a YouTube Channel” posts. Even I have done those. But this time around I thought I would take a different spin on it. These are the some of the more common “WHAT NOT TO DO’s” Problems I see, problems I hear, problems I help my clients fix right away….Ready? Here we go!
1. Don’t choose a random name.
I am hoping this is self explanatory in this day and age. Gone are the days of naming our YouTube Channels HotMamma1128. Now…its all about branding. So, what do you want to be known for? How do you want people to find you on YouTube. After your first 100 subscribers you get to have your very own URL. What would you like that to be? Name your channel THAT!
2. Don’t choose a niche that you’re only semi-interested in.
Its easy to look around and see the “success” of other people and then want to imitate it. So, you choose the same topic, make similar videos, and expect the same results. The problem is – you are not even passionate about it and that’s gonna show! It shows up in your delivery, presentation, and consistency. So, if you want to start a YouTube Channel make sure you are creating content that you love for. No fake love here!
3. Don’t spend months and months trying to film the perfect video before you hit upload and share.
Oooooh! I hear this one from my clients all the time! This record/delete/record/delete situation. They want it to be perfect before it goes live, and you can literally spend YEARS doing this before realizing that you are not even one step closer to where you want to be. If you want to get ahead, you have to get started. Yes! That means you have to upload! I don’t know anyone who kicked off their YT success with a bangin’ video. Everyone’s first video is cringeworthy. Myself included! But if you don’t upload the first video, how can you get to 10, 20, 30, 100? How will people find you? How will they see what you have to offer? So get rid of the perfectionism. It won’t serve you.
4. Don’t buy the latest gizmos and gadgets right off the bat.
Speaking of perfectionism, people want to have the perfect lighting, the perfect camera, the perfect editing. I get it! I preach it! But in the beginning, that can cost thousands! Let me show you what I mean. Here is a look my current equipment list:
Canon 70D http://amzn.to/2l2tdh2 ($1200)
Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens http://amzn.to/2l2nVCa ($500)

TOTAL RETAIL VALUE: $4646!!!
(and this doesn’t even include some other software I use for other things like photo editing)
Now, I will say this equipment has paid me back multiple times over, BUT…I did not start out with all of this. I started out with a PC laptop, free windows movie maker video editing software, and a point and shoot Nikon Camera.
You can make good videos with what you have! The things you need to focus on are lighting, sound, and quality. You can get good lighting sitting in front of a window, good sound from sitting in a quite room, and good quality with your smartphone. If you wanna know more then grab my SMARTPHONE FILMING E-BOOK and it will walk you through all of these steps one by one, in more detail.
5. Don’t give up. Patience is key
Lets get the obvious things out of the way first:
- You’re gonna be nervous
- You won’t like the way you look on camera
- You won’t like the way you sound on camera
- You won’t be great at it…Yet……
But it will get better, you just have to keep going! I promise!
Secondly, you wont get 10,000 subscribers overnight. Is it impossible? Yes. Is it likely? No. So…you will have to practice good ole perseverance here. Keep the end goal in mind (and the end goal shouldn’t be # of subbies btw). The end goal is to have a sustainable income source so you can quit your job, move to bali, buy a new house, get out of debt, whatever your heart desire.
The stronger your desires, the more you know this will all be worth it in the end. Besides I have clients who have made well over $5,000 a month without thousands of subscribers. That should be the goal: money in the bank!
Besides, if you have a desire to offer value and be of high level service to the world it shouldn’t matter if it takes 1 day, 1 month, a year or 10. You destiny shouldn’t have a timeline. You keep going until you get to where you wanna be!
There is a common saying, you might have seen it floating around in cyberspace:
“A year from now, you will wish you had started today.”
No words could be more true! Imagine what life would be like knowing that you can make enough money to sustain you and your family simply by being…YOU!
Imagine waking up and seeing extra zeros in your bank account every morning.
All possible! I did it, and you can too!
